The Quantum Leap Africa Doctoral Training Program

The Quantum Leap Africa Doctoral Training Program in Data Science and its Applications is a highly selective pan-African training program hosted in Kigali, Rwanda, with students based at institutions across the African continent. Applications for the third cohort of the program will open soon.

Are you or members in your network interested in co-supervising a fully funded PhD student starting in the academic year 2023/2024?

If yes, now is the time to propose topics and put together supervision teams.
For more information on the roles and responsibilities of the supervisors, please refer to the program website: https://quantumleapafrica.org/course/phd-in-data-science-2023/#nav-Research_Topic_Submission

Topic Submissions
The deadline to submit topics has just been extended to 1 February 2023. If you are interested in submitting a topic or joining a team but need more time, please get in touch with Molly Mutesi at mmutesi@nexteinstein.org ahead of the deadline.

To submit a topic, you will need a project description and a supervision team of 2-4 supervisors, at least one of which should be based at an African institution. You can submit topics by filling out this form: https://forms.gle/6r3bv5q5Kypptufw9

Student selection
Selected topics will be posted on the program website when applications open. The application process has several stages. The top shortlisted candidates will be put in touch with the supervision team, and you can then decide who you would like to work with for the proposal writing stage. Supervision teams together with their selected candidates then have around 5 weeks to produce a research proposal that will be put forward for consideration to the QLA management board and selection committee.

The successful PhD candidates will start working on their PhD research in Oct-Dec 2023.

Interested but not sure yet?
If you have not yet a concrete idea for a topic or supervision team, but would like to be involved with the program in the future, please fill out this very short form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeQD3YXUaj9j3t8ZnLnhrEzeNiPjFgPpw6TKu9NfSk-9lQ6Og/viewform

We can then get in touch with you if a team is looking for someone with your expertise, and can reach out to you with information on future activities of the QLA data science program.

Questions?
Feel free to reach out to Molly Mutesi (mmutesi@nexteinstein.org) if you have questions on the general running of the program, or reach out to Issa Karambal (ikarambal@quantumleapafrica.org) if you have questions on the academic side of the program.

Please forward this message to interested colleagues.

Together and through this program, we hope to build not only the next generation of African data scientists but also research capacity more generally and a network of data science enthusiasts supporting this goal.

Molly
